Many farmers not aware about the value of rice straw, it can be used for many things, but as we mention before that farmers not aware that’s why many farmers remove the straw from the field and see it as waste. Microorganisms turn straw into compost

1. Microorganisms need an optimal balance of manure, rice straw, moisture and ventilation to turn straw into compost. 

2. Piles smaller than one meter high will not heat up enough, whilst piles that are too large will become heavy and compact.

3. Without ventilation decomposition will slow down.

4. A temperature between 55 and 65 degrees Celsius will kill maximum weed seeds and disease present in the manure.

5. If the pile gets too hot, over 71 degrees Celsius, all the beneficial micro-organisms answerable for breaking down the straw will die and the pile with stop decomposing.

How to Make Compost from Rice Straw

  1. Add rice straw

    Add rice straw to fresh manure at a 2 to 1 ratio.

  2. Alternating layers of rice straw 

    Build the pile by alternating layers of rice straw with layers of fresh manure.

  3. Add water after each layer

    Add water after each layer, to keep it moist, but do not soak it.

  4. A compost pile

    A compost pile should be the height of an adult. 

  5. Compost should be too hot

    In the first 6 days, the compost should be too hot to touch.

  6.  Cool the pile

    If the temperature is over 71 degrees Celsius, cool the pile by turning it.

  7. It should feel warm 

    After the first week the temperature should gradually drop to 20 degrees Celsius, it should feel warm to the touch. 

  8. Water the pile evenly

    Turn the piles every 3-4 weeks, take this opportunity to water the pile evenly. 

  9. Speed up the composting process

    To speed up the composting process, you can buy Effective Micro-organisms, or EM. 

  10.  Ready in 4 months

    Your compost is ready in 4 months, once the rice straw no longer looks like rice straw.

  11. Clean earth

    It feels, looks and smells like clean earth.

  12. Selling it in bags

    Sift the fresh compost to increase its value when you are selling it in bags.
